Alongside Peterborough Mayor Jeff Leal, municipal and fire protection officials gathered to cut the ceremonial ribbon, marking the official opening of the city’s new municipal facility.
Built to meet the Canada Green Building Council’s stringent carbon-neutral standards, the facility is engineered to achieve net-zero energy performance through a variety of innovative strategies that will dramatically reduce operating and maintenance costs. The facility leverages passive solar design and renewable energy sources, featuring advanced, high-efficiency technologies like automated control systems, ground-source heat pumps, rooftop solar panels, and heat recovery systems. Constructed with a mass timber structure that helps sequester carbon emissions, the building also boasts a high-performance exterior envelope. Expansive fenestration fills the interior with natural light, while high-efficiency garage doors help prevent heat loss. Annual savings in operating costs are projected to be around $24,270 for the municipality.
The building includes two truck bays, operating and storage areas, and living spaces that house offices, a break room, and dedicated training areas for operations like pumping and rescue. It is anticipated to be Peterborough’s first facility to achieve zero-carbon and zero-energy certification.
Strategically located to improve emergency response times, this new fire station will support the city’s growing demand for fire protection services.
“Today, Peterborough is making significant progress toward its climate change action plan goals,” Mayor Leal remarked. “This fire station will help the city reduce greenhouse gas emissions while delivering essential services to our residents.”
Mayor Leal also recognized the excellent work of JCB Construction Canada, alongside project architects Unity Design Studio inc. and the City's Facilities and Property Management division for completing the project on time and on budget.
Alexandre Stéphane Boucher, President-General Manager of JCB Construction Canada, shared his pride in the accomplishment: “Today marks the completion of a landmark project for our Ontario team. We are incredibly proud to have delivered this forward-looking project for Peterborough. Carbon-neutral infrastructure is the future of construction, and we’re honored to have contributed so successfully.”
